Looks like the Democrats are in a state of meltdown following the recent CNN presidential debate in Atlanta. MSNBC’s Joy Reid has been running around with her hair on fire, saying her phone was buzzing nonstop with panic from the so-called “Obamaworld” crowd and Democratic campaign operatives. According to her, President Biden’s performance was nothing short of disastrous. Reid made it clear that Democrats were expecting reassurance from their leader, but all they got was a frail and feeble display. The level of panic she described among her contacts sounded like chickens running around without their heads.
MSNBC’s Alex Wagner added fuel to the fire with her in-depth analysis from the spin room, branding Biden’s debate performance as universally negative. Given her description of Biden as rambling and incoherent, one has to wonder if she was watching a train wreck in slow motion. It was so bad that even CNN’s Kasie Hunt had to step in and pile on, noting the visual and verbal contrast between Biden and Trump. Democrats, Hunt said, were practically beside themselves, questioning whether Joe should stay on the ticket.

The former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe certainly didn’t sugarcoat his assessment either. He pretty much declared it a “DEFCON 1 moment.” Imagine comparing Biden and Trump's relatively small three-year age gap to a whopping 30 years during the debate. It’s like watching Grandpa trying to change the channel on a TV while using a toaster remote.
MSNBC’s Jen Psaki, who once held the mic at the White House press podium, said this debate was not what Democrats needed or wanted. To add another twist to the circus, she’s already receiving texts and emails from people suggesting that maybe it’s time Biden gets replaced. There’s nothing like supporters jumping ship faster than rats on a sinking vessel, is there?
And in a dramatic attempt to show unity, Governor Gavin Newsom tried to defend Biden’s dismal performance. With the usual Californian flair, Newsom insisted that Democrats must stand by their man, no matter how weak his debate showing was. He chirped about keeping heads high and having Biden’s back, as if ignoring a poor performance would somehow make it disappear. Newsom called for courage and collective action, but his words sounded more like desperate pleas than confident leadership.
Oh, what a tangled web the Democratic Party weaves when trying to salvage the reputation of its stumbling standard-bearer. Looks like the GOP can sit back with a bucket of popcorn and enjoy the show.
