Democrats in Disarray Tester in Trouble as GOP Surges in Montana Senate Race

The 2024 political landscape is shaking up as Democrats find themselves in a hot mess that could lead to losing their grip on the Senate. Research from Emerson College, in partnership with The Hill, showcases that Sen. Jon Tester, the Democratic heavyweight from Montana, is slipping and sliding right into the clutches of Republican Tim Sheehy. With the latest numbers showing Sheehy ahead 48% to 46%, it seems the Montana seat is turning red faster than a traffic light.

Tester, who has been warming a Senate seat since 2006 and is seeking his fourth term, has had a history of narrowly escaping defeat in previous elections. The pressure is on, as he now faces a formidable opponent—Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL and Bronze Star recipient. Endorsed by Donald Trump and boasting a backdrop that could put even the most seasoned politicians to shame, Sheehy has already pushed past a pack of primary challengers to get to Tester. While Tester has raised nearly $44 million, it seems that even his hefty campaign tank may not be enough to fend off the Republican resurgence.

As polls tighten, alarm bells are ringing within the Democratic camp. Larry Sabato, whose “Crystal Ball” ratings are considered the gold standard for political forecasting, suggests that Republicans could seize 50 seats in the Senate come 2025. Meanwhile, Democrats are forecasted to hang on to 48—two seats remain toss-ups, one of which could very likely be in Montana. With additional funding pouring into Sheehy’s campaign and Tester’s controversial voting history becoming a hot topic, the incumbent may soon find himself on an unceremonious exit route.

The stakes are heightened by Tester’s apparent reluctance to confront tough questions, especially after his evasive actions post-October 7 attacks in Israel, where he faced scrutiny for his votes against military aid. Nothing screams ‘confidence’ like sprinting away from reporters when your record is under fire, and this kind of avoidance isn’t likely to endear him to a voting populace hungry for accountability.

But Republicans are not just resting on their laurels with Tester. There are other battles brewing that could further extend the GOP’s Senate presence. Take Kari Lake, for instance, who is expected to face tough odds in her Arizona Senate bid. Despite predictions of defeat, she was recently leading Congressman Ruben Gallego, which should send jitters up the spines of Democrats everywhere. With Trump-backed Bernie Moreno also in the hunt in Ohio, the GOP could very well cement a widespread takeover if things continue on this trajectory.
