Democrats Threaten DHS Shutdown, Risking National Security

Congressional chaos over Department of Homeland Security funding has crossed a dangerous line, and Rep. Rich McCormick isn’t hiding his disgust. He told Newsmax that Democrats are digging in and threatening to hold DHS funding hostage, a move that would imperil TSA screeners, FEMA response capabilities, and other frontline services Americans rely on every day.

“Shame on them,” McCormick said bluntly when confronted with the idea of a politically motivated shutdown, and his anger is justified. Responsible governance doesn’t look like brinkmanship where career public servants and ordinary travelers become bargaining chips for political theater.

Make no mistake: the Democrat demand to rewrite DHS policy — particularly to hobble ICE and CBP — has hardened into a refusal to support even a short-term continuing resolution unless their conditions are met. That posture, as reported, makes a partial DHS shutdown not hypothetical but imminent unless cooler heads prevail in the Senate.

A DHS lapse isn’t abstract — it has real consequences for security and disaster relief. Congressional committee notices and reporting make clear that a funding gap would affect tens of thousands of TSA and CBP personnel, disrupt border operations, and strain FEMA’s ability to respond to natural disasters, putting American lives and infrastructure at risk.

Conservative Americans should be furious but also focused: Democrats are playing politics with tools that keep our airports safe and our communities resilient. McCormick and other Republicans are right to call out this hostage-taking and demand that funding proceed through regular order rather than ransom demands that reward obstruction.

If the left truly cared about safety, they would negotiate reforms without weaponizing homeland security funding and without threatening a shutdown that hits ordinary citizens hardest. Instead they prefer headlines to responsibility, and it’s up to principled lawmakers and citizens to refuse to let them succeed.

Those who love this country should stand with the men and women who show up every day to protect it — not with politicians who would gamble with national security to score partisan points. Hardworking Americans deserve a government that funds its defenses, backs its first responders, and doesn’t bow to the politics of chaos.
