This incident resulted in the deaths of two beloved figures from Pomona High School: assistant basketball coaches Clarence Nelson and his wife, Lisa. It is an unsettling reminder of the serious problems that arise from lax immigration policies and the issuance of commercial driver’s licenses.
The driver, who is only 21 years old, made his way across the southern border illegally in 2022 and was allowed to remain in the country under the current administration’s policies. After the shocking crash, he was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Such incidents have occurred before, drawing attention to the repeated failures in ensuring public safety related to truck drivers on the roads.
In Oklahoma, the situation is even more concerning. A sting operation conducted by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol uncovered that a staggering 20% of the examined commercial driver’s licenses were either invalid or improperly issued. This means that one out of every five truck drivers could potentially be driving without a valid license. Given that families and children share the highways with these trucks, this statistic is nothing short of terrifying.
As the Department of Transportation continues to crack down on these abuses, Secretary Duffy has announced that funding will be withheld from California due to noncompliance with commercial driver’s license regulations.
