The fall of Fox News has begun thanks to their reckless decision to cut Tucker Carlson and his show in April. The news network has now officially tumbled out of first place in the weekly ratings, according to Nielsen data for the week ending last Sunday. The more left-leaning MSNBC narrowly beat out the conservative giant Fox News that has long been the leader in cable news viewership. It’s an end to Fox’s 120-week-long winning streak in primetime, and it’s all due to their poor decision-making.
The network’s viewership in Carlson’s former slot, the 8 p.m. primetime slot, has dropped by half since they tried to fill it with rotating hosts who weren’t him. The consequences of the decision to cut Tucker is affecting the network’s entire lineup, making it harder for them to negotiate higher fees from cable fires, in addition to the downgrade in ratings.

MSNBC has also been picking up viewers from CNN as some of the liberal viewers were frustrated with the network’s new objective programming. Fox News needs to make some tough decisions about its future. It can either stop trying to be like other networks and go back to what got them to network dominance. Alternatively, they can offer an alternative and be something other than the liberal media. At the core of this issue is free speech, and if Fox News doesn’t stand with its base, then it can’t expect its base to stay around.
Meanwhile, Carlson has launched his own Twitter show, which is smoking Fox in numbers. The show has raked in over 216 million views so far, covering controversial issues such as the recent Trump indictment. Three episodes in, Carlson’s Twitter show is surpassing anything on Fox News. Despite the cease and desist order Fox has filed against him, Carlson claims that the network is actually in breach since he is still under contract. This ongoing feud is yet another hit to the bleeding network that may never fully recuperate its lost conservative audience.
