Governor Mikie Sherrill has acknowledged that roughly 6,000 noncitizens were added to state voter rolls and about 400 cast ballots because of what officials call a “software glitch.” That admission should end the polite talk and start a real investigation into how many illegal ballots were cast and why our election systems are so fragile.

Sherrill says a computer error signed thousands of noncitizens up to vote and that about 400 of those people actually voted. Those are not small rounding errors. They are real ballots in real elections. Telling voters this was a mere technical hiccup won’t satisfy parents, taxpayers, and honest voters who want confidence in election results.
Calling something a “glitch” is the modern political version of saying, “Trust us.” We used to call that plausible deniability. When votes are involved, plausibility isn’t an acceptable policy. Officials must show audit logs, chain-of-custody information, and step-by-step explanations of how the registration process treated noncitizens as eligible voters.
Why this matters for election integrity and the case for voter ID

Republicans should stop treating this as just another scandal to tweet about and start turning it into legislation and oversight. Push audits now, demand public transparency, and if necessary push for federal standards that make it much harder for a “glitch” to introduce thousands of ineligible names into the rolls.
Concrete steps Republicans must insist on
First, launch a full forensic audit of New Jersey’s voter rolls and registration systems. Second, require photo ID and real-time verification at registration so noncitizen status can’t be mixed into voter files. Third, refer confirmed illegal votes for prosecution and demand paper trails for every registration action. Finally, use this episode to renew momentum for the SAVE Act and other election-integrity measures that make registration uniform and accountable.
Let’s be blunt: if Democrats keep treating “glitches” as acceptable explanations for illegal votes, they will keep losing the argument over free and fair elections. Voters deserve better than platitudes. They want action. They want audits. And they want guarantees that one party’s software bugs won’t decide the next close race.
