Greg Gutfeld and his panel on Gutfeld! had a pretty simple beef this week: Democrats keep promising to be “normal” again, but they never actually show anyone what that normal looks like. It’s a useful bit of theater — vague nostalgia dressed up as policy — and it gives them cover when their voters get upset. Problem is, ordinary Americans don’t live on slogans.
The Pitch: “We Just Want to Be Normal”
The Democratic Party sells normal like it’s a plug-and-play setting you can flip back on. Turn down the extremes, return to the old rules, calm things down. Except the clip makes clear those old rules are never defined — because the coalition contains people who want wildly different things.
On one side you’ve got progressives who want sweeping change in culture, education, and corporate life. On the other you’ve got moderates who say they want stability. Saying “normal” lets both groups nod and move on without actually answering whether normal means open borders and woke corporate mandates, or stricter immigration and less politicized schooling.
Normal by Their Definition
Ask a teacher in a suburban district what “normal” looks like and you’ll get an earful. Is normal the classroom where parents and teachers decide reading lists, or the classroom where district bureaucrats approve every book and lesson plan? For a parent trying to keep their kid on track, the answer matters more than a late-night punchline.
Ask a small-business owner what normal means and you’ll hear about utility bills, supply chains, and whether government policy lets them hire or drowns them in red tape. When political elites trade “normal” for talking points, it’s Main Street that pays the bill — literally and figuratively.
Who Gets to Decide Normal?
If “normal” is a consensus, it’s a manufactured one. The left’s definition keeps expanding to include cultural and corporate control under the guise of progress, while the Democratic establishment’s version of normal often means bureaucratic steadiness without confronting the left flank. Voters deserve clarity: are we restoring common-sense institutions or rebranding radical change?
Gutfeld’s jab wasn’t just comedy. It was a reminder that words have consequences. If Democrats want to talk normal, they should say what it looks like at the local diner, the neighborhood school, and the corner hardware store — or stop pretending the phrase means anything at all. Who are they talking to, and more importantly, who are they leaving behind?
