The day after a CNN town hall, Vice President Kamala Harris gathered reporters, but instead of addressing pressing issues like the border crisis or her opinion on Beyoncé’s latest antics, she opted for an evasive dance better suited for a high school prom. While some might say she was playing peek-a-boo with the press, it’s easy to see that this maneuver is classic Harris: deflect and evade.
Her main jab was aimed squarely at former President Donald Trump, who presumably was too busy plotting his next big comeback to participate in town hall debates. Harris took it upon herself to critique his absence, claiming Trump is simply “exhausted” from what she describes as the toughest job in the world. Perhaps she believes that if he spent less time on the golf course and more time on the job, he would realize that the key to energy isn’t a power nap but a solid policy plan.
When it came to the cornerstone of Trump’s 2016 campaign—the border wall—Harris skillfully sidestepped questions like a contestant on a game show. Sure, she had previously described the wall as a “stupid, useless, and medieval vanity project,” but now she’s all about bipartisan action. She is ready to bring back a border security deal she endorsed, but only after those pesky provisions for the wall were tossed aside by Trump, further muddying the waters of her stance. This political limbo dance, where she’s trying to balance the party’s rejection of a wall while simultaneously saying she supports security, is nothing short of impressive or, perhaps, a bit desperate.
In a thrilling revelation, Harris indicated that her “highest priority” is to ensure the border is secure. Just what that means remains as clear as mud, especially since this includes reviving a bill that’s about as popular as a dentist appointment. Instead of taking decisive action, her vague promises sound more like an audition for a role in a political drama than a serious commitment to solve America’s broken immigration system. Meanwhile, she was quick to blame Trump for being the obstacle in “fixing” the problem, throwing shade at the man who had a clear plan while her party continues to bumble around with endless rhetoric.

And then there’s California’s Proposition 36, concerning tougher penalties for theft and drug crimes. Harris, despite being a former attorney general, hasn’t even bothered to read through the ballot measure less than two weeks before Election Day. Clearly, taking a stand is much harder than standing by while hoping for good publicity. Her excuse about not having “the chance” reads like a weak excuse from a student who didn’t finish their homework, demonstrating why many wonder about her commitment to law and order.
As she prepares to rally with a star-studded lineup of Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen, she’s claiming there are “heavy hitters” on the way to Pennsylvania. When reporters pressed her for details, she smiled and said to “stay tuned,” as if this were some sort of Broadway production rather than the serious business of government. While Harris may be smiling her way through political theatre, the American people remain locked in a real-world battle with pressing issues that warrant clarity, not yet another vague performance.
