Harris to Uphold Biden Border Policies Amid GOP Critique

The political circus surrounding Vice President Kamala Harris is heating up, and her campaign is hatching plans to keep the border policies of President Joe Biden front and center. According to her campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the vice president would continue Biden’s not-so-popular partial ban on asylum that has been in effect since June. This declaration put the brakes on most migrants crossing the southern border and barred those who make a beeline into the U.S. illegally from claiming asylum. Harris appears poised to keep the Biden status quo, which might leave a few border security hawks smirking.

While the Democrats are doing a little jig to celebrate Biden’s endorsement of Harris following his decision to sit out the 2024 election, the Republicans are sharpening their pitchforks. They plan to turn Harris’s campaign into a border crisis horror show, with the goal of giving her the “border czar” label. The GOP knows that, under her watch, the border situation might as well come with a flashing neon “open for business” sign. It’s become an enticing opportunity for Republicans to draw attention to the administration’s less-than-stellar immigration policies and the resulting surge of illegal crossings.

In a bid for sympathy, Harris’s campaign manager threw in an explanation for the Biden administration’s rapid change in immigration strategy. The Democrats are desperate to convince voters they are all about “restoring” the asylum system, as if the chaos of recent years doesn’t speak for itself. As the 2024 election looms large, one can almost hear the cries of “please, look away from our failed policies,” ringing out from Democratic headquarters.

Chavez Rodriguez went as far as to exclaim that Biden’s policies have led to a miraculous drop in border crossings. Numbers from June indicated a three-year low in migrant apprehensions, with July showing even fewer crossings. One can’t help but wonder if those miraculous numbers have more to do with sheer luck and less to do with any real policy that instills order. The fact that Democrats regularly blame the previous administration does not help their cause; it seems they are stuck in a cycle of “It’s Trump’s fault” like a worn-out record.

Additionally, there’s growing disenchantment among conservative Americans regarding the Democrats’ call for common-sense immigration legislation. The notion that Congress will roll up its sleeves and tackle immigration reform seems as credible as a unicorn sighting in the Capitol. The insistence on modernizing the immigration system while pinning the blame on Trump is about as helpful as a chocolate teapot in a heatwave. This combination of deflection and lack of accountability is unlikely to work on voters who have been watching the border crisis unfold right before their eyes, and they are not about to let Harris duck responsibility.
