House Speaker Johnson Resists Removal Effort, Seeks Unity in Congress

House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his desire to put an end to the effort to remove him from his position by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, calling the situation “unfortunate.” He appeared on “Fox & Friends” to convey his willingness to move forward and work with everyone, including Rep. Greene. Despite the tension between them, Mr. Johnson stated that he does not hold grudges and is focused on working with all his colleagues, without harboring any ill feelings towards anyone.

The motion to vacate, brought up by Ms. Greene, sought to challenge Mr. Johnson’s position, but it was swiftly tabled with a vote of 359-43. When asked about his opinion on Ms. Greene as a legislator, Mr. Johnson refrained from passing judgment, emphasizing that it is not his place to decide. He stressed the importance of working with all his colleagues and adopting a nonpartisan approach.

Ms. Greene had originally raised the motion due to disagreement over a bipartisan government funding bill, which Mr. Johnson had supported in collaboration with Democrats. Despite criticism from some House conservatives, Mr. Johnson explained the challenges of achieving all their policy objectives with a slim majority and the need to prioritize realistic goals. The motion to vacate was supported by 163 Democrats, highlighting a united front across party lines to maintain stability in Congress.

In the face of ongoing political divisions and challenges, Mr. Johnson emphasized the necessity of a functional Congress, urging for cooperation and compromise to address the country’s pressing issues. He highlighted the critical role of the institution and the shared responsibility to uphold its functioning for the benefit of the American people.
