Many conservatives argue that the mainstream media consistently misrepresents conservative viewpoints, distorts facts, and omits important information to push a progressive agenda. This concern over biased reporting has fueled distrust in media institutions, leading many on the right to turn to alternative news sources for more balanced coverage. Here’s how conservatives believe the mainstream media is lying to them.
Selective Reporting and Omissions
One of the most common criticisms from conservatives is that mainstream outlets selectively report stories that align with their political agendas while ignoring or downplaying stories that contradict their narratives. For example, during the 2020 election cycle, many major media outlets were criticized for downplaying or outright dismissing the Hunter Biden laptop story. Conservative positions are often framed as extreme or reactionary, even when they align with long-standing American values or Constitutional principles. For example, conservatives advocating for stricter border security or opposing progressive policies on gender identity are frequently labeled as xenophobic or bigoted by media outlets, despite many Americans holding these views for cultural or religious reasons.
By oversimplifying conservative beliefs and attaching negative labels, the media alienates conservative audiences and portrays their values in a negative light, contributing to deep divisions within the country.

Fact-checking has become a central part of news reporting, but conservatives argue that fact-checkers often exhibit clear bias. Articles or posts that promote conservative viewpoints are frequently flagged or labeled as “misleading,” even when they represent legitimate, fact-based perspectives. By disproportionately fact-checking or censoring conservative content while allowing questionable progressive claims to circulate unchallenged, mainstream media platforms appear to enforce a double standard, fueling conservative suspicions of media manipulation.
Elevating Progressive Narratives While Dismissing Conservative Concerns
Mainstream media outlets have been accused of promoting progressive narratives while dismissing or marginalizing conservative concerns. For example, during protests in 2020, many media outlets framed left-wing demonstrations as “mostly peaceful” despite significant property damage and violence in some cases.
