House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan took a bold move in the ongoing battle over immigration, serving up a sizzling subpoena to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The congressman demanded a truckload of documents, communications, and data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which the DHS had been withholding like the last slice of apple pie at a potluck.
Jordan, who’s had to follow up ten times since his initial request in November, isn’t taking any more of the DHS’s shenanigans. In a scorching letter, he reminded Mayorkas that the committee has the hulk-sized muscles of constitutional oversight obligations, flexing its power to ensure the DHS is playing by the rules. This ain’t no game of hide-and-seek, folks. It’s serious business.
The DHS had the nerve to sling some links to public data at the committee in January, but Jordan wasn’t having any of it. He made it clear that the DHS wasn’t dancing the congressional cha-cha and provided only a watered-down version of what was actually requested.

Jordan put Mayorkas on notice, reminding him of Congress’s “broad and indispensable” power to conduct oversight. It’s like Congress is the principal and the DHS is a student caught passing notes in class. We all know what happens next. It’s not pretty.
And if Mayorkas didn’t already have enough on his plate, he’s already sweating under the collar after the House voted to impeach him. This isn’t a casual game of Scrabble; it’s serious stuff. The Senate may have put the brakes on a full trial, but the heat is still on. Mayorkas is like a cat on a hot tin roof, trying to wiggle his way out of a tough spot.
