In a turn of events that could only be scripted for a bad political drama, the judge in Hunter Biden’s tax evasion saga has thrown down the gauntlet, threatening to sanction his lawyers for, drumroll please, lying to the court. It seems Hunter’s legal team is in hot water, and not just because their client is the son of the sitting president – which clearly comes with its own set of complications.
U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi took Hunter Biden’s lawyers to task for trying to dance around the facts in their bid to get the charges against him tossed aside. What made this situation even more entertaining was Biden’s lawyers attempting to lean on the sensational ruling from Judge Aileen Cannon, who tossed out Trump’s classified documents case. They claimed this ruling somehow had relevance to Hunter’s distinct mess, but Scarsi quickly put the kibosh on that notion. In a federal courtroom, where logic and fact are supposed to reign supreme, judges aren’t typically amused by such antics, especially when misrepresentation is involved.
Judge Scarsi was quite particular about distinguishing between Hunter’s case and that of Trump. The crux of his argument was that while the special counsel, Jack Smith, operates as a “private citizen,” David Weiss, the prosecutor on Hunter’s case, was confirmed by the Senate and had been actively pursuing charges before being appointed as Special Counsel.
