Liz Cheney recently demonstrated a remarkable ability to pander, even in the company of the most incompetent Vice President in history. During a CSPAN town hall with Kamala Harris, hosted by Maria Shriver, Cheney delivered what can only be characterized as a head-scratching take that outshone even Harris’ many verbal missteps. Her feigned praise left many questioning her judgment and her political acumen.
Body language can say what words cannot, and Cheney’s discomfort was palpable as she sat next to Harris. While Cheney attempted to bolster Harris’s credentials, her words seemed to echo hollowly, revealing an underlying realization that agreeing with this administration could be political suicide. In a bid to make a point about governance, Cheney launched into a line about not hiring someone to babysit if they aren’t fit to handle higher responsibilities. This statement, meant to criticize Donald Trump, missed the mark entirely and drew laughter and cheers from the Harris supporters in attendance, who may well have believed they were witnessing a stroke of genius.

The absurdity of Cheney’s argument came through loud and clear. It’s hard to imagine voters looking at Trump’s accomplishments and deciding they wouldn’t hire him due to his inability—or, let’s be honest, lack of need—to babysit. Trump is not being elected for his caregiving skills but for his proven ability to lead, rebuild the economy, and stand up to global threats. It is apparent that Cheney’s ridiculous comparison resonates with a certain segment of the populace desperately trying to climb into the good graces of the Biden administration by throwing red meat to the left.
But taking an even closer look at Cheney’s assertion calls into question the credibility of Harris as a viable babysitting choice. After all, Harris has garnered a reputation of questionable values, particularly when it comes to children’s issues, advocating for policies that would raise eyebrows among concerned parents. One doesn’t need to look far to understand that her track record includes support for controversial practices regarding minors, making one wonder about her actual capabilities to make decisions regarding children.
Moreover, when examining family structures, one must acknowledge the strange dynamics of Harris’s life as she acts in the shadow of her husband, Doug Emhoff. This supposed “Second Gentleman” has accumulated a not-so-illustrious history of dubious behavior in relationships that raises the obvious question: is this the type of individual a parent would trust around their children? The accusations of cheat and emotional abuse regarding a former partner paint an alarming picture that is not at all comforting.
While Cheney may believe that cozying up to the likes of Kamala Harris will increase her standing with the Democrats, the reality is that her comments are more likely to push her further away from the Republican base that once viewed her with potential. It has become painfully obvious that her grasp of political strategy leaves much to be desired, as she appears to be desperately seeking relevance in a party that has left her behind. Harris’s administration has made it abundantly clear through its policies and personnel that they are hardly experts in areas of morality or administrative competence.
Instead of aligning herself with figures who are tarnished by their choices, Cheney might consider returning to her conservative roots. Trusting her judgment to Harris, a leader with so many blunders to her name, only serves to further alienate Cheney from her political constituents. In the end, she would do well to remember that the party she attempts to align herself with is not one that tolerates weakness or betrayal against its core values—especially when the left is more than happy to throw her under the bus along with Harris.
