That victory has left House and Senate leaders jittery and handed Republicans a ready-made attack line for the fall.
What happened in New York
Three Mamdani‑backed candidates won contested Democratic primaries. Brad Lander defeated Rep. Dan Goldman in NY‑10. Darializa Avila Chevalier beat Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District. Claire Valdez won an open‑seat primary. The wins were organized, energetic, and billed by supporters as proof the insurgent left is growing. That matters because these are not backyard races anymore — they are political headlines with national reach.
Why Democrats are suddenly panicked
Moderates and party leaders are nervous, and for good reason. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has tried to talk unity, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is watching closely. But private complaints and media reports show real anxiety. Rep. Josh Gottheimer’s question — “Are we going to let them take over the party?” — sums up the fear. The worry is simple: insurgent nominees give Republicans easy copy for attack ads and could fracture donor and voter coalitions in swing districts.
What Republicans should do with this gift
Call it what it is: the Democrats handed the GOP an election season gift. Nationalize the primary results, run crisp ads tying insurgent nominees to extreme policies, and remind voters what happens when a party trades electability for ideology. And please, Republicans, don’t repeat the usual mistakes. President Trump can lead the charge, but the rest of the party needs to be organized, disciplined, and ready to capitalize on Democratic division.
The media will try to spin this as “ideological debate” or “vibrant democracy.” Fine. But voters care about bread‑and‑butter issues like jobs, prices, and safety. The DSA surge gives Republicans a clear message: the Democrats are arguing among themselves while real problems pile up. If the GOP wants to win in November, they should trot out that contrast again and again — and make sure they don’t snatch defeat from the jaws of victory this time.
