A global cyberattack has struck multiple federal agencies in the United States and it appears to have exploited a security breach in widely used software. According to reports by the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), they are actively working with affected government departments to resolve the issue.

Eric Goldstein, the CISA Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity, added that his agency is doing everything in its power to ascertain the extent of the damage and provide timely remediation. The cybercriminals behind this assault remain unidentified, though similar attacks in the past have been attributed to Russian-speaking ransomware groups.
This cyber attack is the latest in a series of wide ranging and sophisticated attacks that have targeted various institutions and organizations across the United States, including major universities and state governments. Johns Hopkins University and its healthcare system are among the latest to join the list of institutions affected by this growing cyberthreat.
Hackers stole sensitive personal and financial data which has led to serious concerns about cybersecurity across the country. The Russian-speaking hacker group known as CLOP has already taken responsibility for the epidemic of these cyberattacks.
Federal officials and other stakeholders who have been negatively affected by this breach are under pressure to deliver actionable solutions and secure databases that seem to be under constant threat. Meanwhile, the deadline for ransom payment has already passed for this latest attack, and the hackers are already targeting other victims on their dark web site.
These ongoing attacks highlight the operational strength of skilled cybercriminals and the role of competent and efficient cybersecurity authorities in preventing such attacks. The United States cannot afford to wait for more attacks before putting preventative measures into action.
