The DSA program calls for sweeping changes: abolish the Senate and the Electoral College, replace the President and Supreme Court with bodies picked and subordinate to Congress, abolish ICE and push for open borders and mass legalization, defund the Pentagon, push public ownership of the biggest companies, and dramatically shrink or end mass incarceration. Megan Romer’s rapid‑fire answers on Fox News Sunday — “True,” “Absolutely,” “As a long‑term plan, yep” — made those abstract platform lines sound alarmingly literal. Whether labeled “aspirational” or “long‑term,” these proposals are being promoted by an organization with growing electoral influence.
Constitutional Fantasy Meets Political Reality
Let’s be clear: many of these items require constitutional amendments and would face enormous legal and political hurdles. Abolishing the Senate, scrapping the presidency, or subordinating the judiciary to Congress would tear up the checks and balances the Founders put in place. Yet the legal difficulty doesn’t make the proposals harmless. Political movements push ideas before they pass laws. The clip has already been seized by Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans, and even Senator Ted Cruz slammed the agenda as “insane.” Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat, criticized the exchange too — tellingly, this is not a partisan echo chamber moment entirely limited to conservatives.
Why Voters Should Care
This isn’t academic. Abolishing institutions and concentrating power invites abuse. What Comes Next — And Who’s Responsible
Democrats running competitive races must answer whether they endorse the DSA agenda or reject it. Voters deserve clarity. The mainstream media should stop treating this as harmless publishing and start asking which candidates take these platform planks seriously. Republicans, for their part, should not invent strawmen — they should use the DSA’s own words, the Romer clip, and the program text to make a clear case to voters. In politics, ideas matter. If an organization openly says it wants to abolish American institutions, the public has a right to respond. That response should be loud, informed, and swift.
