In the comedy of politics, it’s often those with the largest platforms who somehow end up playing the world’s smallest violins. Enter Michelle Obama, the former First Lady, who hasn’t had a wink of sleep recently due to Trump’s immigration enforcement. Yes, it seems the plight of deported individuals weighs heavily on her conscience. Meanwhile, she’s nestled comfortably in her massive mansion on a secluded island. Let’s unpack this a bit, shall we?
Standing tall on her estate in Martha’s Vineyard, Michelle voices her concerns about Trump’s deportations. Yet, oddly enough, this sprawling estate is strangely devoid of the very individuals she claims to worry about. If it’s such a crisis, one would think there’d be lines of tents pitching up next to her private beach. But alas, there are no such scenes – just endless views of pristine sandy shores and unoccupied large spaces.
An interesting twist in the tale is the uncomfortable history of deportation numbers. Obama’s administration, under her husband’s presidency, oversaw the removal of a whopping 3 million individuals. That’s a figure that outpaces Trump’s numbers. So, why didn’t sleepless nights haunt her back then? Maybe because when her husband was handling deportations, it was all justified and necessary.

It caused enough kerfuffle for the governor to call in 125 members of the National Guard to swiftly move them along. A swift action not seen since, well, the last time millionaires lived peacefully without unwanted guests in the ritzy neighborhoods.
Michelle Obama isn’t alone in this seemingly stage-managed worry about deportations and discrimination. Joining her ranks are other super-wealthy celebrities, who also mourn publicly about societal issues but seem to do little to address them. One wonders, do any of them offer their gated mansions as shelter or their resources for legal aid? Not really. It’s a classic case of do as I say, not as I do.
So, as the noble speeches continue, the actions remain at a standstill. Any solution that doesn’t involve personal inconvenience stays comfortably tucked away. For now, Michelle can keep worrying from her ivory tower, enjoying the sight of an empty horizon, and perhaps consider if she’d like company in the form of those she claims to lose sleep over.
