A migrant shelter in San Diego, operated by the Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFS), has announced its closure following significant changes in federal immigration policies under the Trump administration. The shelter, which had been a critical resource for asylum seekers since its inception in 2017, is shutting down after receiving no new arrivals since President Trump took office. This development highlights the broader impacts of Trump’s immigration policies, which have drastically reduced illegal border crossings and curtailed federal funding for migrant assistance programs.
The closure stems from the elimination of the CBP One app, a tool introduced during the Biden administration that allowed migrants to schedule asylum appointments at U.S. ports of entry. With this app discontinued on January 20, 2025, and stricter border enforcement measures in place, the shelter has not received any new asylum-seeking families or individuals. JFS has also cited a lack of federal funding—despite previously being allocated $22 million in 2024—as a contributing factor to its decision to halt operations and lay off 115 employees.
