Governor Gavin Newsom finds himself in hot water yet again, this time not for his infamous French Laundry dinner during lockdown, but for his partial ownership of the PlumpJack Café still paying its workers a measly $16 an hour when they should be making $20 according to California’s new minimum wage law. The irony here is as thick as Nancy Pelosi’s wallet! Newsom, the champion of higher wages for fast-food workers, conveniently turns a blind eye to his own business practices. Talk about “do as I say, not as I do”!

It’s no surprise that as the minimum wage hikes hit businesses in the Golden State, they’re feeling the burn faster than a double-double at In-N-Out. Monica Navarro’s Foster Freeze in Lemoore shut down faster than you can say “tax hike” due to the increased wages, leaving many without a job. Who needs a paycheck when you’ve got a virtue-signaling governor, right? Let’s see how Newsom spins this one positively – perhaps he’ll blame it on climate change or the recall election.
As if the hypocrisy weren’t thick enough already, Newsom allegedly tried to exempt a major donor to his campaign, Greg Flynn of Panera Bread, from the wage increase. It’s like a scene straight out of The Godfather – political favors for cash under the table. Luckily, for once, it seems the snake didn’t slither out of this one as Flynn likely won’t be getting a free pass on paying fair wages. The Democrat elite get caught with their hands in the cookie jar once again, and the everyday worker pays the price.
California businesses like Round Table Pizza are already cutting jobs, and chains like El Pollo Loco are turning to machines to save on labor costs. Automation may be the way of the future, but it’s also a sign that these minimum wage hikes could do more harm than good. It’s time for Governor Newsom to stop playing politics with people’s livelihoods and start facing the consequences of his own failed policies. But hey, at least the PlumpJack Café is still serving up pricey dishes while their workers struggle to make ends meet. Priorities, right?
