NJ Illegal Immigrants Cost Taxpayers $7B Yearly

A recent study by a New Jersey lawmaker revealed that illegal immigrants are costing taxpayers more than $7 billion a year. The report, titled “Report on the Cost of Illegal Aliens to New Jerseyans,” was published by Republican assemblyman Paul Kanitra. It provides detailed information on the number of illegal immigrants in the state, their impact on taxpayers, and the current situation at the border.

According to Kanitra’s report, there are approximately 894,000 illegal immigrants in New Jersey as of April 2024. This means that nearly 1 out of every 10 residents in the state is an unlawful immigrant. The study highlighted that New Jersey taxpayers are covering costs for housing, legal services, healthcare, education, and other government services, totaling $7.3 billion annually due to illegal immigration.

Kanitra emphasized the need for stricter enforcement measures and the removal of incentives that attract illegal immigrants to New Jersey. He also shared insights from his visit to the southern border, where he witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by authorities in dealing with the border crisis. The assemblyman called for state leaders to adopt measures like adding citizenship status on state IDs, ending education benefits for undocumented immigrants, and mandating E-Verify for employers to address the issue.

The video released by Kanitra during his trip to the border featured discussions with Texas Department of Public Safety members who are actively involved in addressing the U.S.-Mexico border crisis. The report and video underscored concerns that actions in New Jersey may be encouraging people to break laws and access taxpayer-funded benefits. Kanitra urged for immediate action to prevent further escalation of the crisis and protect taxpayer resources.

The ongoing surge of encounters at the southern border since President Biden’s inauguration has raised significant challenges for federal immigration authorities. The report by Kanitra sheds light on the impact of illegal immigration on New Jersey taxpayers and calls for decisive steps to address the issue. In light of these findings, it is crucial for policymakers to prioritize border security and enforce laws that protect American taxpayers from bearing the burden of illegal immigration.
