NY AG Letitia James Doubles Down on $464M Fraud Case Against Trump

New York Attorney General Letitia James has decided to hold firm on a civil fraud judgment against the newly elected President Trump, a staggering $464 million worth of legal baggage that he apparently can’t shake off. This cherry on top of the political sundae comes just as Trump gets ready to take the reins of the country again. It seems that James is determined to cramp Trump’s style, even from her reportedly cushy office in New York.

Trump’s legal team recently pleaded with James to drop the case, maybe hoping to find some common ground in the spirit of post-election goodwill—though one might argue that “goodwill” is as hard to find in New York as a polite taxi driver. They argued that the judgment threatens to interfere with his presidential duties. However, in a move that demonstrated her ability to cling to the past, James shot back with a letter saying there was no valid reason to dismiss the judgment. Apparently, she believes that principles come before practicality, forgetting perhaps that the principles of political battle sometimes involve a little good ol’ fashioned common sense.

Let’s recount the tragic tale that led to this judgment. Earlier this year, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump had inflated his net worth to gain favorable tax and insurance deals. This sounds a little like the classic “he looked at me funny” accusation—a real stretch at best. But when it comes to Trump, every misstep is blown up like a balloon at a kid’s birthday party. Meanwhile, folks happily inflating their own financial scenarios in much less public arenas may not face such scrutiny.

James’ office defended its refusal to budge by insisting the case is closed and the judgment is final. Deputy Solicitor General Judith Vale echoed sentiments that might as well have been ripped straight from the pages of an overzealous legal drama, declaring that Trump can still perform his duties whilst the matter drags through the courts. Apparently, being the leader of the free world while dodging a multi-million dollar debt is just another Tuesday in New York.

In response to this ongoing legal debacle, Trump’s spokesperson teetered on the edge of exasperation, referring to the judgment as a discredited “witch hunt”. While Trump has faced more legal challenges than a reality star in a soap opera, each new episode only fuels his supporters’ fervor. Suggesting that AG James should heed calls for unity, especially after a bitter election season, has clearly fallen on deaf ears in that neck of the woods. If unity is the goal, one might wonder why James is still holding onto this case like a dog with a bone. Get ready folks, this political rollercoaster is far from over.
