President Donald Trump’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from parts of the White House this week has set off a predictable firestorm. The press corps cried foul. The White House defended the move. And Former President Barack Obama, eager to score a point, offered a line that looks worse under a spotlight: “I’m trying to think what would have happened if I had said, you know what, FOX News, get out of here. It’s unimaginable.” Trouble is, it’s not so unimaginable — because it already nearly happened on his watch.
Obama’s remark and the old Fox News flap
Obama’s on‑camera jab about barring Fox News sounds rich when you remember the 2009 episode. Back then, White House staff tried to keep Fox out of a pool interview with a government official. Bureau chiefs pushed back and Fox was allowed in. So when Former President Barack Obama acts shocked about a president excluding a news outlet, he’s asking us to forget that his team once did the very thing he now pretends to find “unimaginable.” That’s not memory lapse — it’s revisionist theater.
Trump’s ban, press credentials, and legal questions
President Donald Trump announced the ban on social channels and some reporters found their badges disabled when they arrived to cover events. The White House Correspondents’ Association warned this sets a dangerous precedent, and the affected newsrooms say they will defend their First Amendment rights. Those are serious claims. But they don’t erase the fact that the Obama administration also pushed the boundaries on press access and played hardball with leak investigations.
Press freedom vs. press accountability
Here’s the uncomfortable tradeoff few in the newsroom want to admit: press freedom is vital, but so is press accountability. The Obama Justice Department prosecuted a number of leakers and took aggressive steps critics said chilled reporting. When reporters spend a decade praising one president and savaging another for the same tactic, it looks less like a defense of liberty and more like partisan selective memory. If the media wants moral high ground on press freedom, it should be ready to use it even when the target is a political ally.
Where we go from here
This fight should force answers. The White House needs clear rules about credentials and process so access can’t be pulled as political payback. Newsrooms should stop acting shocked when rules change and start arguing principles, not politics. And as for Former President Barack Obama — his on‑air surprise made for a great clip. It would be nicer if it came with honest context instead of a selective memory tour. The real test of press freedom is even-handedness; until the media and the powerful insist on that, every new row will look like the old one dressed in fresh outrage.
