Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and former Columbia University student, caused outrage by refusing to condemn Hamas during a CNN interview. He argued it would be “disingenuous” to denounce the terrorist group while Palestinians face hardship. This refusal comes despite Hamas being a designated foreign terrorist organization responsible for brutal attacks against Israeli civilians.
Khalil’s stance shows shocking moral blindness. When asked to condemn Hamas, he dodged the question entirely. Instead, he shifted blame to Israel. This evasion ignores Hamas’s documented atrocities, including the murder of innocent families. Every decent person should reject terrorism without hesitation.
The activist claimed Palestinians are “starved” by Israel. This ignores Hamas’s role in stealing humanitarian aid meant for civilians. Israel works to minimize civilian suffering while fighting terrorists embedded among the population. Khalil’s false narrative helps Hamas by spreading propaganda.
As a Columbia student, Khalil led anti-Israel protests on campus. He helped organize the Gaza Solidarity Encampments that harassed Jewish students. His group demanded Columbia cut ties with Israel. These protests created an environment of fear for Jewish students on campus.
Khalil previously claimed Palestinian and Jewish liberation are “intertwined.” But his actions tell a different story. His refusal to condemn terrorism proves he doesn’t seek peaceful coexistence. Real solidarity would recognize Hamas as the enemy of both Palestinians and Israelis.
The activist entered the U.S. on a student visa requiring full-time enrollment. Columbia temporarily suspended him for protest activities. His visa status remains precarious after his involvement in disruptive campus protests.
Khalil was recently detained by U.S. authorities and faces deportation risks. Supporters protested his detention at Foley Square. These activists ignore his support for a terrorist group threatening America’s closest Middle East ally.
This refusal to condemn terrorism is un-American and dangerous. It gives cover to groups that murder civilians. America must stand firm against those who sympathize with terrorists. Protecting our nation means removing those who won’t reject groups like Hamas.
