In some exciting news for the conservative world of sports media, it has been announced that Dave Portnoy, the founder and president of Barstool Sports, has taken back control of the company from investors. Hallelujah! This means that Barstool Sports can finally return to its roots and break free from the shackles of censorship. Earlier this year, PENN Entertainment, a casino group and sports gambling company, had swooped in and acquired Barstool Sports for a whopping $551 million. That’s a lot of dough! But alas, it seems that the partnership between PENN and Barstool was not meant to be. In a dramatic “emergency press conference” on social media, Portnoy announced that they had “gone their separate ways.” Good riddance, say I!
Portnoy, a man unafraid to speak his mind and push boundaries, had nothing but kind words to say about PENN. But he also made it clear that having a publicly traded company was cramping Barstool’s style. The pesky regulations and meddling media outlets, like the New York Times and Business Insider, were stifling the creative genius that oozes from Barstool. In exchange for regaining full control of Barstool Sports, Portnoy made a deal with PENN that included some non-compete agreements and other restrictive covenants. Hey, sometimes you have to make sacrifices to regain your freedom, right? But fear not, PENN still has a stake in the game and will get a cut of any future sales or monetization events. Can’t blame them for wanting a piece of the Barstool magic!
