Palestinian journalist Rula Jebreal recently crossed a line on Wajahat Ali’s podcast when she called House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries an “AIPAC monkey” and then insisted she “didn’t mean it in a racist way.” The short clip has become a hot mess—equal parts insult and excuse—with the expected fallout from Black leaders and a tepid apology that reads like a PR memo. This is not just a one-off rude remark. It is a test of whether the left will apply its standards evenly or only when politically convenient.
What happened on The Left Hook
On the podcast, Jebreal attacked Jeffries over his stance on Israel and accused him of being “bought and paid for by AIPAC,” then added the slur: “he’s an AIPAC monkey.” The host noted the obvious — that calling a Black man a “monkey” has terrible racial connotations — and Jebreal awkwardly tried to step back, claiming she did not mean it as a racial insult and pointing to a “three monkeys” analogy. That excuse is flimsy and obvious. Words matter. Context matters. And when you attack a Black political leader with that language, it isn’t a slur-free debate tactic; it’s bigotry, plain and simple.
Backlash and the half-hearted apology
The Congressional Black Caucus rightly condemned the remark and reminded everyone that there is no “non-racist” way to call a Black man a monkey. Jebreal later posted an apology on X, saying the term was “inappropriate and offensive.” Fine. But apologies mean little if the outlets and hosts that platform such remarks treat them as mere blips. The predictable chorus — some outraged, some offended, and many waving the “context” flag — shows how selective outrage has become when the targets fit a certain political script.
Double standards on full display
Here’s the uncomfortable truth liberals won’t like: their movement has turned moral clarity into a partisan tool. If a Republican had used that insult against a Black Democrat, cable news would have run it for weeks and calls for censure would be deafening. Yet when the offender speaks against Israel or sides with a favored cause, the outrage meter mysteriously drops. That is not justice. It’s hypocrisy dressed up as virtue signaling.
Accountability should be blind to politics
Democrats and left-leaning media must choose. Either they believe anti-Black slurs are always unacceptable, or they believe some targets are exempt because their politics offend a coalition. If they mean what they say about racial justice, there should be real consequences for platforming slurs and for the hosts who smooth them over. Call for better standards, not selective memory. Until that happens, voters of every party will see this episode for what it is: another example of the left’s sliding scale of outrage and a reminder that words carry weight no matter the speaker’s politics.
