In a stunning display of disregard for the Constitution, the U.S. Senate voted down an amendment offered by the great Sen. Rand Paul that would have reminded everyone of Congress’ power to declare war. It’s as if these senators forgot the very oath they took to uphold our sacred Constitution!
Now, let’s break it down for those who are clearly in need of a civics lesson. Sen. Paul’s amendment simply stated that Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty should not supersede the constitutional requirement for Congress to declare war. Seems simple enough, right? Well, apparently not for these 83 senators who voted against it.
You see, Article 5 of the NATO treaty basically says that if one NATO member is attacked, the others should come to their defense. But that doesn’t automatically mean we’re going to war, folks! It’s just a commitment to respond to an attack. It’s like saying “Hey, buddy, if you get punched in the face, I’ll have your back.” It doesn’t mean we’re going to start a street brawl!
Today I offered an amendment that would reaffirm our constitutional authority to declare war. We cannot delegate our responsibility to NATO. pic.twitter.com/y0WUYEmyXQ

But these senators, with their lack of understanding and respect for the Constitution, seem to think that Article 5 gives them a blank check to wage war without any input from Congress. Well, guess what? That’s not how it works! The power to declare war rests solely with Congress, and no international treaty can change that.
Sen. Paul eloquently reminded his colleagues that they cannot delegate their responsibility to NATO. We elected them to represent us and make decisions on our behalf, not pass the buck to a supranational organization. We need senators who will uphold the Constitution and safeguard the power of Congress, not ones who will bow down to international pressures.
It’s truly disheartening to see so many senators fail to recognize the importance of their role in our system of checks and balances. The power to declare war is not something to be taken lightly. It is the most significant decision a legislator can make, and it should be made with careful consideration, debate, and a thorough examination of the facts.
But instead, these senators have chosen to brush aside their constitutional duties and continue down the path of perpetual war. They are willingly ignoring the Constitution and engaging in military activities around the world without the necessary approval from Congress. It’s a blatant violation of their oath and a slap in the face to every American who values our constitutional principles.
So, dear readers, it’s time to hold these senators accountable. Let them know that we expect them to honor the Constitution and respect the power of Congress. Reach out to them, flood their inboxes, and make your voices heard. We cannot allow this disregard for our founding principles to go unchallenged. Stand up for the Constitution, stand up for America!
