Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen, a Democrat, held a press conference on Monday to strongly criticize Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, also a Democrat, for her public health order that bans the legal carrying of firearms, both concealed and open, for a period of 30 days. Sheriff Allen made it clear that his office will not enforce this part of the order due to its unconstitutionality. He emphasized that his primary duty is to protect the Constitution and ensure the rights of law-abiding citizens are not violated.

In a bold statement, Sheriff Allen pointed out the flawed logic behind the order, stating, “This order will not do anything to curb gun violence other than punish law-abiding citizens from exercising their constitutional right to self-defense.” He also reminded everyone that criminals do not follow laws or public health orders, making the ban ineffective and unfair to those who want to protect themselves and their families. Sheriff Allen expressed his frustration at the short notice he received about the order, calling it an act that added to his annoyance.
Despite the ban, Sheriff Allen assured the citizens of Bernalillo County that they should not hesitate to use their firearms in self-defense because his office will not enforce the ban. He highlighted that his department will continue its proactive efforts to combat gun crimes, emphasizing that law-abiding citizens should not worry about facing legal repercussions for defending themselves.
Governor Lujan Grisham responded to Sheriff Allen’s comments with a dismissive tone, stating, “I don’t need a lecture on constitutionality from Sheriff Allen: what I need is action.” Her statement suggests a disregard for the concerns raised by Sheriff Allen and a willingness to prioritize her own agenda over the rights of the people of New Mexico. Such a response only underscores the importance of having elected officials who prioritize the safety and constitutional rights of their constituents.
