Supreme Court Dismisses Michael Cohen’s Suit Against Trump

Michael Cohen just can’t seem to catch a break in his personal crusade against former President Donald Trump. The Supreme Court recently delivered the news that Cohen’s desire to resurrect a lawsuit claiming Trump retaliated against him has officially been dashed. This marks the end of a saga that started back in December 2021, and let’s just say, it’s been a bit of a wild ride.

The cringe-worthy backstory begins with Cohen, once Trump’s attorney, trying to blame Trump and then-Attorney General Bill Barr for his troubles when he was ordered back to prison in 2020. Cohen whined that the DOJ played a role in retaliating against him after he sought an early release, ultimately leading to him spending more time in a cell than his public persona would suggest is comfortable—especially for someone who fancies himself a victim in all this.

Cohen was serving three years for campaign finance violations, tax evasion, and a few lies thrown in for good measure, when he found himself potentially eligible for some cozy home confinement via COVID-19 policies. But hold the phone—when he applied for this sweet deal, the Trump DOJ hit him with restrictions that would make a kindergarten teacher blush. And whose fault was that? Certainly not Trump’s, who was in the middle of a pandemic, running the country, while Cohen was drafting a tell-all book.

Cohen’s dramatics ramped up when he outright refused to play by the DOJ’s rules, claiming that they were stifling his authorial aspirations. This refusal apparently led him to experience the horrors of solitary confinement, where he claims to have spent nearly 24 hours a day, surrounded by less-than-ideal living conditions. It’s not exactly a concentration camp, but one can see how an author might be a tad peeved not to have a pen and paper handy.

In a twist of irony, the Biden administration and Trump found common ground over their mutual disdain for Cohen’s whining. Elizabeth Prelogar, Biden’s solicitor general, supported the dismissal of Cohen’s petition, deeming it not worthy of the high court’s time. Apparently, they found Cohen’s cringeworthy attempt to turn his tales of woe into a free-speech crusade was more laughable than serious.

Cohen’s saga serves as a reminder that sometimes, even the most vocal critics of Trump find themselves taking it on the chin when reality sets in. While Cohen has tried his best to paint a picture of tragedy, the courts have uniformly told him to pack it up. The Supreme Court’s recent decision is just another notch in Trump’s belt, reminding everyone that the self-proclaimed victim is still, very much, a loser in the eyes of the law.
