Two innocent children lost their lives while praying in God’s house this week in Minneapolis. An 8-year-old and 10-year-old were gunned down during morning Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church on Wednesday. These babies were just starting their school year, excited about learning and playing with friends.
The shooter targeted children through church windows with a rifle during a sacred service. Seventeen other people were hurt, including 14 kids between ages 6 and 14. Three elderly church members in their 80s were also wounded while they worshipped. The coward then took the easy way out with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
This attack happened in a place that should be the safest spot on earth – God’s house. These families sent their children to a Catholic school and church because they wanted them to learn values and faith. Instead of protection, they found terror and heartbreak that no parent should ever face.
The shooter was a 23-year-old who had legally changed names from Robert to Robin Westman. This person came armed with multiple weapons and targeted the most vulnerable members of our society. While families prayed for blessings on the new school year, evil walked among them with deadly intent.
Minneapolis has become another example of how our cities are failing to protect innocent life. The mayor can talk about wrapping families in love, but where was the security that could have stopped this monster. These children deserved better than thoughts and prayers after the fact.
Our schools and churches need real protection, not just empty promises from politicians. We cannot keep letting madness walk free while our children pay the price with their lives. Every house of worship and every school should have trained security ready to stop evil before it strikes.
The families of these victims will never be the same after losing their precious children. No parent should have to bury a child who was murdered while sitting in church pews. These two little ones will never grow up, never graduate, never have families of their own because of one person’s sick decision.
America must wake up and realize that evil exists and it targets what we hold most dear. Our faith, our children, and our communities are under attack every single day. We owe it to these two young souls to demand real action that protects innocent life instead of making excuses for those who destroy it.
