In a scene that seems ripped right out of a B-rated sci-fi movie, New Jersey has become the latest hotspot for mysterious drone swarms, leaving residents bewildered and speculating what could possibly be behind it. While the average citizen attempts to make sense of these buzzing intruders, President-elect Donald Trump has stated that the federal government surely knows a lot more than it’s letting on. One would think that a simple identification of some flying robots would be a no-brainer; however, it appears that everything is just as shrouded in mystery as a classic conspiracy plot.
During a press conference in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump explained that the military is quite cognizant of where these drones originate. He humorously suggested that if need be, the military could pinpoint their take-off spots with precision—be it a garage or a backyard—and then promptly proceed to investigate. Given Trump’s knack for theatrics, it’s no surprise that he called out the government for keeping the public in the dark, but was also quick to joke that he might avoid his usual weekend golf retreat in Bedminster due to the skies being filled with what could be potential drone paparazzi.
President Trump just said the U.S. government and military know precisely where the drones are coming from.

It is refreshing, if not mildly amusing, to see some Democrats—who usually have their heads buried in the sand—starting to join the conversation regarding the drone mystery. Senator Amy Klobuchar acknowledged that while the administration has steadfastly assured the public of their safety, clearer answers may be needed. How comforting it is to know that even lawmakers from across the aisle are equally perplexed by a situation that should be at the top of every security briefing. One might wonder if they will take the impending drone dilemma seriously or if it’ll just become another episode of congressional theater.
But the drone drama doesn’t stop there; former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has weighed in on the issue in a big way. Christie took Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to task for downplaying drone sightings as “not unusual activity.” He doesn’t buy it—having lived in New Jersey his entire life, this is the first time he’s seen a swarm of drones invade his personal airspace. If nothing else, Christie’s observations inject a much-needed dose of local color into the conversation, even as patrons in a Monmouth County restaurant aired their frustrations about a woeful lack of transparency from leaders at both the state and federal level, including Governor Murphy and President Biden.
With strange drones hovering overhead and the military presumably watching from the sidelines, one has to ponder what is going on in these supposedly “safe” skies. Is it a benign experiment, a shadowy government test, or simply a new form of high-tech surveillance that has yet to be understood? Regardless of the intentions behind these flying gadgets, one thing is certain: the public deserves more than half-baked reassurances and vague statements. It seems that whether one is a Republican or a Democrat, the call for clarity is the only bipartisan effort that stands amidst this drone buzz.
