New York Attorney General Letitia James, long celebrated by the left for her aggressive pursuit of former President Donald Trump, now finds herself at the center of a growing scandal that raises serious questions about her integrity. Federal housing officials have referred James to the Department of Justice for potential criminal prosecution over allegations of mortgage fraud. The accusations suggest that while James was busy prosecuting Trump for supposed financial misrepresentations, she may have been engaging in similar conduct herself—an irony not lost on critics.
The core of the allegations is that James falsely claimed a Norfolk, Virginia, property as her primary residence in 2023, despite being legally required to maintain her primary home in New York as the state’s top law enforcement officer. By designating the Virginia home as her principal residence, James allegedly secured a government-backed mortgage with more favorable terms, including a lower interest rate. This is a classic case of the political elite playing by a different set of rules, exploiting loopholes and technicalities to their advantage while holding others to the strictest standards.
But the pattern of questionable behavior doesn’t end there. James is also accused of misrepresenting the number of units in a Brooklyn property she owns, listing it as a four-unit dwelling to qualify for better loan terms, when in reality it was a five-unit building. Going back decades, documents suggest she and her father even signed mortgage papers as “husband and wife” to obtain a home loan, a move that, while perhaps outside the statute of limitations, further illustrates a longstanding willingness to bend the truth for personal gain.
The hypocrisy is staggering. James built her political brand on the promise that “no one is above the law,” using that mantra to justify her relentless legal assault on Donald Trump, which resulted in a staggering $454 million judgment against him. Yet now, when the same standards are applied to her conduct, the left circles the wagons and cries “political retribution.” This is precisely the double standard that has eroded public trust in our institutions: one set of rules for the powerful and well-connected, another for the rest of us.
President Trump, never one to mince words, has called for James’s immediate resignation, labeling her a “totally corrupt politician.” Many Americans—especially those who have watched the justice system weaponized against conservatives—are inclined to agree. If James is found to have committed the very fraud she accused Trump of, she must face the same consequences. Equal justice under the law isn’t just a slogan; it’s the bedrock of our republic. The American people will be watching closely to see if accountability is truly blind, or if Letitia James gets the pass so often granted to the left’s chosen champions.
