USAID Inadvertently Funded Al-Qaeda Leader Awlaki’s Education

In a story so absurd it sounds like a Hollywood script, it seems the now-defunct USAID had a hand in funding the college education of Anwar Awlaki, a notorious al-Qaeda terrorist. This revelation might raise eyebrows, but for those familiar with the tangled web of government ineptitude, it’s just another day in the life of federal mismanagement. Awlaki, who played a pivotal role in al-Qaeda’s digital propaganda efforts, cleverly misrepresented his birthplace to secure these funds, claiming he hailed from Yemen instead of his actual home turf: Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The tale gets murkier from there. After receiving his education courtesy of American taxpayers, Awlaki didn’t just rest on his laurels. Instead, he went on to form connections with several hijackers involved in the 9/11 attacks and eventually rose to a leadership position within al-Qaeda’s Yemen affiliate. He wasn’t satisfied with just being a willing participant; he became the godfather of digital jihad. His writings inspired countless would-be terrorists in America and abroad, marking him as one of the most dangerous figures in this era of radicalization.

It’s mind-boggling to imagine that a U.S. government agency was, in essence, investing in the future of terrorism. USAID, known for doling out funds with little to no oversight, managed to finance an individual who would later find himself on the CIA’s radar as the first American targeted for elimination. A drone strike in 2011 finally put an end to his reign, but the fact that he was once supported by taxpayer dollars is nothing short of infuriating.

Catherine Herridge and her journalistic compatriots have pulled back the curtain on this web of incompetence, highlighting how a ruthless terrorist benefitted from the government’s good intentions—good intentions that went terribly wrong. The gall of the situation is enough to leave any sane person questioning the practices at agencies like USAID. Supporting terrorism seems to be a generous misstep, and yet, the legacy media continues to insist that there is no waste or abuse in government spending.

For all the media figures trying to downplay this fiasco, the absurdity is painted in vivid colors. If an agency funded a future terrorist’s education, it’s about time some serious accountability is demanded. The punchline is that Awlaki’s story didn’t just end in a college classroom; it blossomed into a cautionary tale about the dire consequences of blind bureaucratic spending. The mismanagement is staggering, but it seems it’s just par for the course in government circles, where wasting taxpayer dollars has become an art form.
