The university’s email to campus reportedly said, in condensed form, that “healing continues” and announced a campus closure while inviting people to the United Way’s Day of Caring. Turning Point USA is said to be scrambling to find another venue on short notice. UVU, Turning Point USA, and Senator Dan McCay did not immediately comment to reporters, which leaves the public with questions and very few answers.
This is about more than logistics — it’s about principles
Calling a day of volunteer work “reflection” instead of holding a memorial for the man shot on your lawn feels like an institutional dodge. Universities exist to protect speech and to confront hard moments honestly. If an act of political violence happens on campus, the community deserves clarity and respect — not a PR pivot to community service that conveniently avoids naming the victim. UVU must answer straightforward questions

If yes, why was it revoked? Was the Day of Caring substitution planned in advance or presented as a replacement? Were security or legal concerns the reason for the change? Turning Point USA deserves to know so it can plan; students, faculty, and the public deserve openness so this institution doesn’t look like it’s running from the hard work of truth-telling.
Conclusion: honesty beats PR stunts
Campus cleanups are fine. Honoring a man who died on your campus is worth more than a carefully worded blanket about “healing.” If UVU wants to show real leadership, it will publish the email text, say whether a memorial was canceled, and explain the reasons in plain language. Anything less looks like a university trying to tidy up trouble with a broom and a smile — and that won’t cut it for students, families, or the memory of Charlie Kirk.
