Biden Approves Longer Range Missiles for Ukraine as Trump Prepares Peace Talks

In a last-minute display of foreign policy chaos, outgoing President Joe Biden has given Ukraine the green light to unleash long-range American ATACMS missiles against targets inside Russia. Apparently, the Biden administration wants to make sure 2024 starts off with a bang—literally. This latest escalation comes just as President-Elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, with a clear mandate to seek peace. One can’t help but wonder if Biden is auditioning for the role of “Saboteur-in-Chief.”

For much of his presidency, Biden hesitated to allow Ukraine the use of these powerful missile systems against Russia, fearing that poking the bear might lead to repercussions. Who knew that Biden would suddenly pivot in his last days? Reports from the reliably liberal Washington Post and New York Times reveal that the Biden team had previously restricted Ukraine’s missile capabilities to striking Russian targets within Ukrainian territory. It seems now that concerns about nuclear escalation have taken a back seat to what can only be described as theater of the absurd.

It is familiar territory; notably, Biden’s approval for Ukraine to use these missiles coincides with increasing international tension. The Kremlin has been ramping up its own forces, and now works with unsavory allies like North Korea. The timing raises eyebrows. If anything, this decision appears to be more about making headlines than an actual coherent strategy to protect Ukraine. The outgoing administration may be signaling to the world that it’s full steam ahead—accountability can wait until the next administration settles in.

As President Trump has started reaching out to key players in the ongoing conflict, including Ukraine’s Zelensky and even Vladimir Putin, it seems Biden’s late-game mission might be more about obstruction than support. The incoming president’s diplomatic efforts to push for peace might have been the Biden administration’s biggest trigger for this brazen escalation. It’s almost like Biden wants to leave behind a little parting gift of chaos for Trump to sort out when he takes office.

Despite Biden’s best intentions, it could backfire in spectacular fashion. Reports suggest the Biden administration is pushing to funnel more cash to Ukraine before the transfer of power, while at the same time, European nations seem prepared to create their own funding sources to keep the conflict simmering. Imagine if the Trump administration decides to use funding as leverage, as some have hinted; it could leave both Zelensky and Biden scrambling to fill the coffers while trying to enforce some semblance of peace.

Across the pond, the G7 nations might be high-fiving each other about their “enduring support for Ukraine,” but populism is on the rise, and the people are feeling the pinch. Ironically, while expensive missile strikes loom, left-wing governments grappling with budget crises may struggle to rally support for endless funding of a war that isn’t necessarily popular back home. As missiles rain down on both Ukraine and Russia, one thing seems certain: the geopolitical games have shifted, and the stakes could not be higher.
