Carl Higbie’s FRONTLINE segment this week pulled no punches, arguing that California’s Democrat leadership is spending hardworking taxpayers’ money on undocumented migrants — including people claiming transgender status — while ordinary Californians struggle with rising costs and collapsing services. Higbie cited investigative reporting and guests who say state programs now routinely funnel benefits to noncitizens, a scandal that should outrage every fiscal conservative.
The outrage is rooted in policy: California has expanded Medi‑Cal eligibility for adults without satisfactory immigration status and state law and guidance require health plans to cover gender‑affirming services as medically necessary care. Those statutory changes and administrative rules mean that, as a matter of law, gender‑affirming treatments can be covered under taxpayer‑funded programs.
Reporters and analysts have put numbers on the consequences, claiming the state now spends billions on healthcare for undocumented residents and warning those costs are rising fast as the program expands. Conservatives have every right to question how many taxpayer dollars are being diverted from citizens to cover elective and expensive procedures.
Worse, investigators and congressional staffers are uncovering allegations of fraud tied to some immigrant‑run organizations, including probes into money flows linked to Somali‑run businesses and nonprofits that allegedly funneled public dollars away from intended uses. When millions disappear into shell operations and transnational transfers, the public has a duty to demand rigorous audits, prosecutions where warranted, and the return of funds to California families.
Democrat politicians who boast about “compassion” while quietly expanding eligibility for noncitizens should be honest about tradeoffs: every policy has costs, and right now Californians are paying higher taxes and fewer services as Sacramento writes checks to people who broke our immigration laws. The federal government is even suing over certain state policies, and that legal fight should be a wakeup call to voters about irresponsible fiscal governance.
The remedy is straightforward and unapologetic: restore priorities to citizens and legal residents, freeze questionable payouts, launch independent audits, and bolster border and immigration enforcement so state benefits go to those who deserve them. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle must insist on accountability — no more turning a blind eye while bureaucrats and bad actors exploit loopholes at the expense of hardworking Americans.
Conservatives should seize this moment to force transparency and return power to taxpayers who fund every public program. We love our communities and want humane treatment for immigrants who follow the rules, but compassion without accountability invites abuse; it is time to put American families first and stop funding a system rigged by political elites.
