A group of 18 Democratic lawmakers has recently requested the Biden administration to reassess new asylum regulations for undocumented immigrants. These regulations might entail a five-year prohibition on seeking asylum for individuals who enter the country outside of official ports of entry.
The Democrats, led by Illinois Representatives Delia Ramirez and Jesús García, expressed concerns that the new rules would force asylum seekers to make complicated arguments about the dangers they face shortly after arriving in the country. They believe this could be challenging for migrants who have just gone through a long and difficult journey.
Under the proposed rules, undocumented immigrants who enter the country through unofficial points of entry may not qualify for asylum unless they meet certain exceptions. The Democrats have called Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and USCIS Director Ur Jaddou to review these more stringent guidelines.
