Don Lemon, the golden boy of CNN, has been on a downward spiral in recent months. Last year, he was demoted from his primetime show, which had few viewers, and his morning show, which also had few viewers, bombed completely after averaging just 331,000 viewers. This downward spiral may have been the cause of his outburst at one of his co-hosts, Kaitlan Collins.

According to Radar Online, Lemon, 56, approached Collins, 30, after the show’s broadcast and loudly accused her of “interrupting” him during their segment. An insider reported that Lemon “screamed” at Collins who was “visibly upset and ran out of the studio”. This incident left CNN staffers “shaken” and Chris Licht, the CNN honcho, appalled. After the incident, Lemon was instructed to leave work for the rest of the day and “cool off”.

The pressure on Lemon and CNN is evident from the network’s tanking numbers. During the week of January 16th, Fox News had an average of 1.996 million primetime viewers while CNN barely cracked 400,000 with just 417,000 in total day viewers. MSNBC faired better than CNN with 943,000 average primetime viewers.
The incident between Lemon and Collins has caused speculation that Lemon is struggling to share the spotlight following his AM move. It is clear that Lemon is feeling the pressure and it is impacting his performance on air.
