Altman’s background as a former DSA insider and union official gives weight to his warnings, and he has been publishing and speaking about this drift publicly.
Altman bluntly told national audiences that the DSA has been “captured” by factions who openly embrace communist tactics and rhetoric, and that these elements are comfortable working alongside Maoists and Trotskyists in pursuit of power. He described a culture that is hostile to anti-communism and increasingly dismissive of democratic norms, a transformation that should alarm anyone who values liberty.
In longer-form writing he explained how the group’s internal debates and organizational decisions accelerated this shift, noting that delegates voted to remove a constitutional provision that once barred Leninists and, in practice, allowed entryism and radical caucuses to grow unchecked.
