Ex-Union Boss Pleads Guilty to $290K Union Theft

A former union boss has formally admitted he took more than $290,000 from the faculty union he ran for years. Kye Carbone, 69, of Athens, New York, pleaded guilty on June 22 to three counts of wire fraud and three counts of theft from a labor union. The plea was accepted by Judge Anne M. Nardacci, and sentencing is set for October 20, 2026, in Albany.

What the guilty plea says about union embezzlement

Prosecutors say Carbone stole money from the United Federation of College Teachers Local 1460 at Pratt Institute between 2011 and 2023. He used union cash for personal expenses, restaurant bills, travel and to buy and renovate a house in Athens. What began as a broad indictment with dozens of counts was narrowed: he pleaded to six counts, three wire fraud and three theft-from-a-union counts. Those are serious charges that carry long prison terms and heavy fines on paper.

Who blew the whistle and why this matters

The Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General and the Office of Labor‑Management Standards helped bring this case to court, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York prosecuting. Officials called it a betrayal of union members. This case shows why watchdogs and federal enforcement matter when union leaders abuse power and unions fail to protect members’ money.

A simple lesson in accountability

Here’s the blunt truth: unions that preach solidarity should not tolerate leaders who treat members like an ATM. If someone runs a union for years, then uses that trust to fund meals and renovations, that isn’t leadership — it’s theft. Conservatives should push for stronger transparency rules, routine audits, and real penalties so union embezzlement is no longer shrugged off as “one bad apple.”

Carbone’s plea moves the case from accusation to conviction, but the work isn’t over. Members deserve to know if they will get restitution. Voters and taxpayers deserve systems that stop union corruption before it eats up dues and public trust. When sentencing comes in October 2026, let’s hope the judge sends a clear message: steal from workers, and you will be held accountable.
