With Democrats currently holding a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, every seat is crucial for the Republicans in their quest to flip the script. And let’s not forget, Michigan is a state that Trump won in 2016, only to see it slip away to Biden in 2020. So, the stakes are high, people!
On the blue side, there’s a fierce primary battle between Rep. Elissa Slotkin and actor Hill Harper. Slotkin, with her background as a CIA agent and a successful run in the House, is seen as a top contender. Meanwhile, the GOP is still scrambling to rally behind a single candidate, leaving them with their knickers in a twist.
The Republican primary is packed with former Reps. Mike Rogers and Peter Meijer, former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, and businessman Sandy Pensler all vying for the spotlight. Rogers has faced criticism from the right for his past bipartisan work, Meijer is butting heads with the Trump loyalists, and Pensler’s self-funded attempts have fallen flat in the past.
And let’s not even get started on the dismal polling and fundraising numbers for the GOP candidates! Slotkin is stacking up cash like nobody’s business, leaving her Republican contenders in the dust. The late primary date in Michigan is doing the GOP no favors, and with such a crowded field, their chances are looking flimsier than a house of cards in a windstorm.
But fear not, my red-blooded compatriots! Some Republicans believe that the plethora of candidates could actually work in their favor, as it shows the enthusiasm and drive within the party. So, while the odds may not be in the GOP’s favor, they’re not throwing in the towel just yet.
