The Hunter Biden plea deal continues to raise eyebrows as new revelations emerge about the leniency shown in the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Leo Wise, who argued for the plea deal, admitted in court that he was not aware of any other individual being given such a favorable deal. This admission highlights the extraordinary nature of the agreement.
It is particularly surprising considering that Wise is known for being a tough prosecutor who pursues stern sentences for even minor offenders. In a 2018 tax evasion case that was less severe than Hunter Biden’s, Wise demanded 12 months of jail time for the defendant, who only owed $60,000. One would expect the same level of rigor in prosecuting the president’s son, who evaded taxes amounting to between $1.2 million and $1.6 million. However, the prosecutors only asked for probation for Hunter Biden.
Wise and Hines even agreed to the claim that Hunter received $1 million from Patrick Ho (a Chinese national convicted for bribery) “as a payment for legal fees” –
without even thinking to question whether that payment was a bribe masked as legal fees.

The contrast between the treatment of Hunter Biden and the defendant in the 2018 tax case is striking. It seems that Hunter Biden has been given special treatment, with the prosecutors even overlooking an easily provable felony charge. This lenient handling of the president’s son is out of character for these tough prosecutors, who have built their reputation by bringing down some of Maryland’s biggest public corruption cases.
The Hunter Biden plea deal raises concerns about equal justice under the law. It seems that political connections are influencing the handling of criminal cases, allowing individuals like Hunter Biden to escape the consequences that ordinary citizens would face. This kind of favoritism erodes the trust in our justice system and highlights the need for accountability and transparency.
