Left-Wing Rhetoric Fuels Violent Threats Against Trump

Federal authorities this week arrested Raymond Eugene Chandler III of Wilkinsburg after an investigation uncovered a string of menacing voicemails in which he graphically urged a member of Congress to carry out an assassination of President Donald Trump and threatened violence against that lawmaker’s young daughter. The sworn FBI affidavit unsealed May 1 lays out the April 18 and April 29 voicemails almost word for word, showing a progression from angry rhetoric to explicit incitement and true threats that cross any reasonable line of free speech. Americans should be alarmed that someone willing to concoct such fantasies was broadcasting them into the offices of elected officials, and the facts in the affidavit make clear why federal prosecutors stepped in.

This disturbing arrest didn’t happen in a vacuum — it comes amid a string of politically motivated attacks and attempts that have targeted public figures and even the President in recent years, including the July 2024 shooting at a Pennsylvania rally that nearly cost lives. Conservatives have warned for years that unchecked, hateful rhetoric breeds violence when the media and political elite excuse or normalize it, and we are now seeing the predictable consequences show up in criminal complaints and courtroom dockets. It’s sober proof that talk matters, and the tone of a movement can produce real-world harm when law enforcement and social platforms fail to act.

Fox News analyst Guy Benson was right to call this pattern “disturbing” and to demand that the political left reckon with the role its fevered rhetoric plays in radicalizing people. The segment on May 5 highlighted how these incidents are not isolated and how partisan double standards let threats from one side be minimized while similar words from the other side are screamed about. If the left truly cares about safety and the rule of law, it should stop reflexively defending violent rhetoric when it comes from their side and instead insist on consistent condemnation and consequences.

Let’s be blunt: the people who traffic in violent metaphors and gladiatorial politics share responsibility when fantasies turn into threats or attempted violence. The criminal complaint here shows that the boundary between words and actions is close — and our justice system must send a clear message that plotting, soliciting, or glorifying assassination is a federal crime. Conservatives stand with law enforcement in demanding swift prosecution, not theater or selective outrage, and we should back penalties that reflect how dangerous targeted threats to public servants and their families really are.

Media outlets and social platforms also have an obligation. Too many times mobs are fed by platforms that amplify radical rhetoric while shielding repeat offenders, and the results are now manifesting in real threats and arrests across the country. Deplatforming violent agitators, enforcing terms of service consistently, and cooperating with lawful investigations are common-sense steps that protect speech we cherish while keeping murderous fantasies from becoming plans. Nothing about that stance is about censorship; it’s about preserving a culture where political disagreement doesn’t devolve into the threat of murder.

This moment should be a wake-up call to every American who loves freedom: condemn violence, insist on equal accountability, and refuse to let political passion excuse the most vile acts. Patriots on the right will never cheer lawlessness, and we will always demand that those who threaten our leaders and their children face the full force of the law. It’s time for the left, the media, and Big Tech to stop pretending their rhetoric is consequence-free, and to join the rest of the country in defending the rule of law and the safety of our public servants.
