NYPD Treads Lightly with Columbia Protesters, Vows Firmness on Streets

On Wednesday, the folks over at Fox News brought on NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry to chat about the recent demonstrations at Columbia University. Daughtry made it clear that the demonstrators are “kids” and the NYPD is being extra delicate with them. After all, they don’t want a repeat of the chaos of 2020. But, as Daughtry warned, if the students decide to take their protests to the streets or start setting up camps, that’s a big “nope” from the police.

The host, Trace Gallagher, chimed in with a reminder of the mess that followed the Black Lives Matter protests, including lawsuits and millions of dollars paid out by the NYPD. It’s no wonder the police are being cautious now, right? Daughtry agreed, emphasizing that they have to consider that these are just students, not the same as the George Floyd situation. But, they’re not going to let any street shenanigans slide.

They want to handle the demonstrators with care, but they’re also not about to let the whole city turn into a protest zone. It’s a tough spot to be in, but hey, at least they’re thinking about how to handle things without it turning into a complete mess.
