Poker fans across the country were left heartbroken over the weekend by the passing of poker legend Doyle Brunson. The 89-year-old poker player, known as “Texas Dolly,” had won an impressive 10 World Series of Poker tournaments and was widely regarded as the “Godfather of Poker.”

In a statement released on Sunday by Brunson’s family and his agent, he was remembered as a “beloved Christian man, husband, father, and grandfather.” The statement went on to explain that the family would have more to say over the coming days to honor his esteemed legacy. The tweets that followed the statement included a quote from Brunson about his philosophy on life – clearly showcasing the wholesome character he embodied.
Aside from his impressive way with cards, Brunson also wrote a book on poker strategy that built interest in the game as fans sought to learn from the best. Following the news of his death, many fans, friends, and fellow players took to social media to express their sadness and admiration for Brunson. Actor James Woods praised Brunson for his kind and gracious nature. Actress Jennifer Tilly reminisced about his wicked sense of humor that always brought a smile to her face. Fellow poker player Phil Galfond thanked Brunson for the opportunity to sit opposite him and learn from a player considered to be one of the greatest of all time.
