As a former Navy SEAL and a member of Congress who’s already raised alarms about America’s retreat from hard power, McGuire’s message was blunt: deterrence is not optional in the Indo-Pacific.
Across the Taiwan Strait, Taipei has been running large-scale military and civilian defense drills — from Han Kuang rehearsals to nationwide urban resilience exercises — designed to harden the island and train citizens for gray-zone and higher-end conflict. Those drills aren’t theater; they are sober preparations for the very contingency Beijing keeps rehearsing, and they show Taiwan is taking responsibility for its own defense.
Meanwhile, Beijing’s saber-rattling continues: PLA live-fire drills, airspace incursions, and explicit statements from Xi’s government make it plain that reunification by force remains an explicit objective. This is not a distant hypothetical — Chinese doctrine and recent operations demonstrate a clear strategy to normalize coercion and create faits accomplis unless the free world pushes back.
Any American leader who shrugs at those moves is playing geopolitical chicken with the security of our allies and the American way of life. Weakness invites aggression; strength deters it — a lesson our Founders understood and that Rep. McGuire rightly echoed when he criticized the overreliance on soft power and urged a return to serious strategic competition.
The response is simple and urgent: accelerate lethal and asymmetric aid to Taiwan, rebuild our defense industrial base, and deny Beijing the economic choke points it dreams of weaponizing. Republican lawmakers on the Hill have been warning about the catastrophic economic and strategic fallout if China ever succeeds in seizing Taiwan, and they’re right — the U.S. must act now while deterrence still works.
Hardworking Americans should not be baited by elites who prefer appeasement; we must stand with freedom and common sense. Congress should back McGuire and other patriots by funding real deterrence measures and securing supply chains, because a free Taiwan is not just an Asian issue — it is an American imperative for peace, prosperity, and the defense of liberty.
