This was not some random mugging in a bad neighborhood — it was an attack in a place Americans trust for healing, and it cost a hardworking public servant his life. Federal authorities say the suspect had been encountered and released by Border Patrol previously, and ICE lodged a detainer seeking to keep him in custody, a request that now stands at the center of a bitter clash between federal enforcement and California officials.
We should be furious not only at the alleged perpetrator but at the policies that let this happen. ICE officials have pointed to California’s sanctuary approach and the Biden administration’s lax border stance as direct contributors to dangerous people remaining at large; the agency reports thousands of cases where detainers were not honored and thousands of criminal illegal immigrants remain in state custody with active detainers.
Governor Newsom and state leaders who preach compassion must explain why public safety appears to take a back seat to political signaling when human lives are at stake. We stand with the victim’s family and with the doctors, nurses, and staff who work in our hospitals and deserve to do so without fear. We also stand with brave men and women in law enforcement who want to do their jobs but are hamstrung by politics and paperwork; they need clear law and the authority to keep communities safe.
Americans who value safety, common sense, and the rule of law must turn anger into action at the ballot box and in the courts. Demand accountability from California’s leaders, insist on cooperation with federal authorities, and never accept policies that trade the security of retirees, social workers, and ordinary citizens for a hollow political narrative.
