Nobody should pretend this was merely an accident of fate. The video shows gaps: metal detectors being taken down and officers briefly out of position as the suspect sprinted past, raising legitimate questions about venue procedures and guest screening at an event that attracts national leaders. If the press establishment and hotel management want to host gatherings where presidents speak, they must accept responsibility for hardened, professional security, not hollow platitudes about freedom of the press.
Let’s be frank: some in the media spent years normalizing political violence and demonizing half the country, and now they expect us to treat these incidents as blameless tragedies of modern life. Hardworking Americans know that rhetoric has consequences, and that elected officials and the press must stop pretending outrage is a substitute for common-sense safety and accountability. The elites who run these events owe the country answers and immediate fixes.

Prosecutors must pursue the maximum penalties allowed by law, organizers must be held to strict security standards, and Congress should fund and staff the agencies that protect our leaders without political gamesmanship. Above all, every parent, worker and veteran should applaud the agents who ran toward danger and demand a Washington that defends its people — not one that excuses failure.
