Skepticism Over Biden Willingness to Debate Trump Grows

Byron York from The Washington Examiner cast doubt on President Joe Biden’s willingness to debate former President Donald Trump later this year, following Biden’s nod to being open to a debate during an interview with commentator Howard Stern. York expressed skepticism, predicting that such a debate is “very unlikely” and suggesting that Biden had only made the statement in passing during the interview.

On Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle, York questioned the feasibility of Biden getting through an actual debate, considering his team’s apparent reluctance. Matt Towery, the chairman of InsiderAdvantage, also shared this sentiment, suggesting that the Biden campaign would likely “find an excuse” not to have the president debate Trump. Towery mentioned Trump’s legal battles and potential convictions as factors that the Biden campaign could use to avoid a debate.

Despite these predictions, York pointed out that voters have experienced both candidates as president, allowing them to compare how their lives were under the leadership of Trump and Biden. He referred to recent polling data, which indicated that a majority of recipients viewed Trump’s presidency as a success, while a majority viewed Biden’s presidency as a failure.

Although Trump has expressed his readiness to debate Biden “ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE,” the former president did not participate in any of the debates for the Republican primary, potentially giving Biden leeway not to debate Trump ahead of the election. The first presidential debate is scheduled to take place on Sept. 16 at Texas State University.
