Smuggler Who Gave THC Candy to Children Sentenced to 5 Years

A federal judge this week handed down a five-year prison term to Manuel Valenzuela after he admitted to helping smuggle unaccompanied children from Juárez into El Paso. The case is ugly and simple: minors, some as young as five, were moved across the border and on at least some trips were given candy laced with THC to keep them quiet. The message from law enforcement was clear — this conduct is criminal and it will be punished.

Sentence delivered in child smuggling case

Valenzuela pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to transport aliens, multiple counts of bringing in aliens for profit, and aiding and abetting. Prosecutors say he picked up children inside the U.S. and paid drivers for deliveries. The court imposed a 60-month sentence. One child in the scheme needed hospital treatment and was diagnosed with THC poisoning after being drugged during a smuggling event.

How the smugglers operated

Drugging children with THC-laced candy

According to court records, smugglers used fake U.S. documents and lied to border inspectors, claiming to be the children’s parents. To keep the youngsters quiet and compliant, drivers reportedly handed out candy with THC. That detail should make everyone’s skin crawl. Using drugs on kids to help move them across the border is cruelty turned into a business tactic.

The law enforcement response and who led it

This prosecution was led by Homeland Security Investigations El Paso and U.S. Border Patrol, with help from the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and Joint Task Force Alpha. Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva called the conduct “heinous,” and Acting Special Agent in Charge Ryan G. McRae described it as “reprehensible and cruel.” The Government is treating this as part of a bigger fight against transnational human-smuggling networks tied to cartels.

Why this case matters for border security

Beyond the horror of drugged children, this case is a reminder that borders left porous invite predators. Operation Take Back America and JTFA are working to target the leaders and organizers behind these schemes, but sentences like this one show only a part of the fix. We need tougher enforcement at the border and smarter cooperation with Mexican authorities to cut off the criminal routes. If we care about children and rule of law, we must both punish the criminals and stop them from finding easy ways in.
